Business Secretary Greg Clark has announced the creation of a new institute named in honour of Rosalind Franklin, whose pioneering use of X-rays to study biological structures played a key role in the discovery of DNA’s ‘double helix’ structure.
The institute will have its hub at the Harwell campus near Oxford. It will bring together world-leading science, technology and medical research from the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester and Edinburgh plus three universities based in the capital – Imperial College, University College London and King’s College London – with industry partners keen to advance innovative and disruptive research to transform our understanding of disease and speed up the development of new treatments.
The institute is part of the government’s Industrial Strategy to maintain the UK’s global leadership in science and innovation and will be delivered and managed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
