How can pharmaceutical companies improve success rates of their drug discovery and development programmes? In 2011 AstraZeneca embarked on a major revision of its research and development (R&D) strategy, focussing decision making on the five most important technical determinants of project success - the right target, the right patient, the right tissue, the right safety and the right commercial potential.

Dr Stefan Platz, Global Head of Drug Safety and Metabolism at AZ will describe how adoption of this ‘5Rs’ framework has guided successful, efficient drug discovery and development, leading to greater than four-fold improvement in R&D productivity.
